| dc.description.abstract | In the distant past, inland navigation in Brazil played a prominent role in the territorial expansion and occupation of the interior regions. Currently, river transport is the most important mode of transportation in the North region, and its growth potential is large throughout the country, with only 50% of its waterways economically viable. To realize this growth, however, the challenges that currently exist must be overcome. In this article, to discuss the issues to be overcome and the economic sustainability of Brazilian inland navigation, a general overview is presented, from hydrographic regions and major waterways to economic sustainability and regulatory aspects, through the characterization of the fleet, companies and of the loads involved. | en_US |

| dc.description.resumo | A navegação interior no Brasil, no passado, teve papel de destaque na expansão territorial e na ocupação das regiões interiores, com menor densidade populacional. Nos dias atuais, o transporte hidroviário é o modal de transporte mais importante na região Norte e seu potencial de crescimento é grande em todo o país, que tem apenas 50% de suas vias navegáveis economicamente viáveis. Para concretizar esse crescimento, contudo, os desafios atualmente existentes precisam ser suplantados. Neste artigo, visando discutir as questões a superar e a sustentabilidade econômica da navegação interior brasileira, é apresentado um panorama geral, desde as regiões hidrográficas e as principais hidrovias até a sustentabilidade econômica e os aspectos regulatórios, passando pela caracterização da frota, das empresas e das cargas envolvidas. | en_US |
