Abstract: The study analyzes the printing and writing paper sector in the international and Brazilian markets, covering production, consumption, trade, companies, and prospects. In 1997, global production reached 89.3 million tons, with an average annual growth rate of 3.7% between 1990 and 1997, with coated papers standing out due to their significant growth in market share and demand. The United States, Japan, and European countries led production and international trade, while Brazil accounted for 2.2% of global production. In the Brazilian market, production reached 1.98 million tons in 1997, growing faster than the paper industry as a whole, while five business groups accounted for approximately 90% of production. Domestic consumption also expanded significantly, particularly for coated papers, while exports represented a substantial share of production, predominantly consisting of uncoated papers. For the following years, the study projected moderate growth in global consumption, a greater share of coated papers, and, in Brazil, an approximately 12% increase in production by 2000, with coated paper production expected to double and uncoated paper production to decline, as well as a reduction in imports due to the expansion and improvement of domestic production.</summary>

Abstract: The report analyzes the Brazilian textile machinery and equipment industry in 1976, highlighting the sector’s strong expansion in 1973–1974 and its subsequent downturn in 1975–1976, associated with the crisis in the textile industry and the decline in cotton production; in this context, domestic manufacturers operated with idle capacity, although some companies maintained plans for expansion and modernization. The study examines the production structure, the main companies, technologies, and equipment manufactured, as well as imports and exports, identifying technological limitations and dependence on foreign equipment, but also advances resulting from licensing and technology transfer. Supply and demand projections point to future shortages of equipment such as automatic winding machines, combing machines, extruders, and jersey machines, recommending the promotion of domestic production and the incorporation of more sophisticated technologies. With regard to exports, the report considers Brazil’s participation still limited, but identifies opportunities particularly in Latin America and Africa, advocating the strengthening of the industry’s international presence and the exploitation of its advantage in lower-complexity, lower-cost equipment.</summary>

Authors: Lima, Eriksom Teixeira; Velasco, Luciano Otávio Marques de
Abstract: The restructuring of industrial processes worldwide has introduced new challenges for the merchant shipping sector. The simple provision of port-to-port transportation services has been replaced by sophisticated logistics systems that transport and manage the movement of raw materials, parts, components, and finished products between industrial units and production lines, and from these to final distributors. The article is divided into six sections. The first presents the evolution of world trade, the transformations in production processes and locations, and their impacts on merchant shipping. The second provides statistics on the global merchant fleet, including its distribution by countries and companies. The third examines the dynamics of the global freight market. The fourth discusses changes in international maritime transport markets and their effects on corporate organization. The fifth offers an overview of the Brazilian context. Finally, the sixth section presents the study's conclusions.
